Newcastle Castle is a medieval fortification in Newcastle upon Tyne, built on the site of the fortress which gave the City of Newcastle its name and has a very bloody past. The most prominent remaining structures on the site are the Castle Keep, the castle’s main fortified stone tower, and the Black Gate, its fortified gatehouse.

Your ghost hunt at Castle Keep will see you exploring all areas of the building made available to us, where you will be able to experience glass divination, table tipping and a group human pendulum experiment. Plus, for those comfortable enough – Ouija boards will also be on hand for you to use – all to aid your communication with the dead. Also, you will have a whole host of the most up-to-date ghost hunting gadgets to use whilst you carry out your ghost hunt. Taking part in spirit call-outs and wait to see what happens in the silence that follows. Haunted Houses likes to work in small teams to give you the very best experience possible. For the very brave lone vigils (ghost hunting in a room all alone) are very popular and plenty of opportunities to do so will be given.

Reported Ghosts

The most famous ghost at Castle Keep is that of the “Poppy Girl”. A ghost of a flower girl that was imprisoned at Castle Keep for owing people money.

According to the legend, whilst there she was raped and beaten to death by the male prisoners. She is often seen haunting the stairways of the Keep and when nearby a strong smell of flowers is reported. Other paranormal activity within the Keep is that of chanting coming from the Queen’s Chamber (a room that is renowned for it’s hauntings), the chanting is believed to be from chanting monks.

A lady has also been seen in the chamber and also in the chapel. The sounds of footsteps down the corridors, which are later seen to be empty, has also been reported along with unusual mists, orbs, shadows and the feeling of being touched by ghostly hands.

With all these stories and reporting’s, Castle Keep is a ghost hunt not to be missed!

Venue History

As of April 2020 Castle Keep will no longer be allowing Paranormal events. No new dates for this venue are planned

Use of the site for defensive purposes dates from Roman times, when it housed a fort and settlement called Pons Aelius, guarding a bridge over the River Tyne. In 1080, a wooden motte and bailey style castle was built on the site of the Roman fort, which was the ‘New Castle upon Tyne’.

Castle Keep was built by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror, having returned south from a campaign against Malcolm III of Scotland. The stone Castle Keep was built between 1172 and 1177 by Henry II on the site of Curthose’s castle. The Black Gate was added between 1247 and 1250 by Henry III.
