Venue History
Shaping Birmingham’s Legacy: The Evolution of Newman Brothers
Founding the Legacy: Origins in Brass Craftsmanship
In 1882, as Alfred Newman and his brother Edwin founded Newman Brothers, they delved into brass founding to create predominantly cabinet furniture. However, their trajectory altered significantly in 1894 when they relocated to Fleet Street and embraced the production of coffin furniture.
From Cabinets to Coffins: Evolving and Specializing
The relocation not only shifted their physical location but also redefined their production focus. While they initially crafted cabinet furniture from molten brass, by 1894, Newman Brothers were officially recognized as ‘Coffin Furniture Manufacturers.’ This transformation aligned with their natural extension into coffin furniture—a realm that seamlessly complemented their mastery in metalwork and craftsmanship.
Changing Partnerships, Unchanging Craftsmanship
With Edwin’s departure from the partnership in 1895, Alfred took on the mantle of the sole proprietor. During this shift, coinciding with a pivot from cabinet to coffin furniture, Alfred navigated the company as a sole trader until his passing in 1933, all the while Newman Brothers’ valuation reached an impressive £12,500—a testament to their resounding success.
A New Generation: Horace and George Assume the Helm
Following Alfred’s demise, his sons, Horace and George, assumed leadership, steering the business towards becoming a limited liability company. Even with George’s unfortunate passing in 1944, it was Horace who continued to lead until his own death in 1952. This marked the cessation of direct Newman family management.
Continuity Amidst Change: The Emergence of Joyce Green
In the post-Horace era, a group of shareholder directors, along with the Whittington and Doggart families, took charge. However, it is the most intriguing chapter that unfolds with Joyce Green’s remarkable ascent from an office secretary to becoming the owner. In the year 1989, she acquired the company, deftly navigating challenges until its eventual closure in 1998.
Preservation and Legacy: The Vision of Joyce Green Lives On
Beyond the closure of the company, Joyce’s dedication persisted. With unwavering commitment, she safeguarded the building and its industrial history, transitioning the business to Birmingham Conservation Trust in 2003. The vision was to transform the site into a visitor attraction and studio spaces. Despite the hurdles, the year 2006 brought secured funding, which led to Grade II* listed building recognition and an auspicious project trajectory.
As Newman Brothers’ legacy endures, its evolution, partnerships, and steadfast commitment continue to be intricately woven into the vibrant tapestry of Birmingham’s history.
