Your ghost hunt at Fort Widley, Portsmouth will see you exploring this location in the dark when everybody else you know has gone to bed. On your ghost hunt you will be able to experience glass divination, table tipping and a group human pendulum experiment. Plus, for those comfortable enough Ouija boards will also be available for you to use. All to aid your communication with the dead.

You will also have a whole host of the most up-to-date ghost hunting gadgets to use whilst you carry out your ghost hunt. Taking part in spirit callouts, inviting spirits to interact with the environment being measured by the equipment, then wait and see what happens.

Haunted Houses Events likes to work in small teams to give you the very best experience possible. For the very, very brave – lone vigils (ghost hunting in a room all alone) are very popular and opportunities to do so will be given – But be warned! Doing so in the basement should only be for our more hardened investigators.

Reported Ghosts

Said to be haunted by the ghosts of a drummer boy and French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars and other ghostly residents include a man said to be a sergeant-major who enjoys whistling while haunting the fort. The old sergeants’ mess is reported to be a very intimidating area to visit now.

On one occasion a member of the horse riding staff witnessed a leather strap be thrown by someone unseen across the corridor that she was walking along! The keep of the fort is another area where there have been reports of ghostly footsteps and bangs are often heard. These are said to be made by a former prisoner, or possibly a prison guard.

Venue History

Fort Widley is a Grade II listed building built between 1860 and 1868 was to protect Portsmouth from a rear attack. Used in the Victorian times to accommodate various infantry units. It was also used in both World War I and World War II.

  • Take part! Help to lead a scientific vigil, or perhaps a more traditional ghost hunting experiment- or simply just be an observer. The choice is yours
  • Working respectfully. Start your evening by learning how to apply spiritual protection, and work using the upmost respect for the sprits we encounter and fellow guests
  • All attendees must be 18 years or older
  • Not suitable for those in pregnancy
  • This is a very dark location, all attendees must bring a torch with them
  • All attendees are expected to wear sensible shoes and warm layered clothing
  • This location has free parking, A private car park is to the front of the building
  • Refreshments are provided by Haunted Houses Events and are included in the price
  • Guests may also bring own personal breaktime snacks
