Venue History

Located just under 30 miles away from London you can find what is possibly the most well-known “secret” facility ever, built 125feet underground and reached via an innocuous looking cottage, Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker.

Having been constructed in 1952 to be part of the early warning system known as ROTOR, which consisted of most underground control centres possessing top of the range telephony and telex systems. This particular shelter was one of the larger Operation Control sites and was designed to be able to accommodate hundreds of personnel – the numbers changed as the infrastructure altered over the years.

Due to the Cold War fortunately never progressing any further than posturing, the construction never saw genuine use, but we do have first-hand accounts of the huge bomb doors being shut and the various systems being powered up. It saw occupation as both military and civilian, and was even a designated Regional Government Headquarters for London at one point.

Having been decommissioned in 1991, the Parrish family re purchased it from the Government and opened it as a museum, showing a brief insight into what life under the threat of nuclear armageddon was like.

Kelvedon Hatch as a village is mentioned in the Domesday book (1086AD) and over the next 800 or so years was a parish of opposites, with wealthy land owners living side by side with destitute agricultural workers who resided in dilapidated and overcrowded cottages. It is now very much part of the London commuter belt, with a population of around 2,500 according to the most recent census, compared to under 300 in 1811.
