Reported Ghosts

The Morecambe Winter Gardens is said to be split down the middle and has a good side and an evil side in terms of its hauntings, particularly the stage area where people have reportedly been pushed, poked and harassed by an unseen force. The stage area is said to be the most haunted part of the building.

A ghost of a woman who was possibly murdered is said to haunt the main staircase where it is believed she was pushed to her death. Raised voices were heard followed by a scream, her husband claimed she fell.

The ghost of a wardrobe lady who failed to achieve her big dream of one day being on the stage is said to still haunt the dressing rooms. In this same area there have also been sightings of a woman dressed in a RAF uniform, constantly patrolling the area but never interacting with anyone.

Sounds of muttering have been heard coming from the ladies toilets on the 1st floor and a dark entity is thought to be present in the bar area that doesn’t like people lingering in it’s space.

A ghost of a little boy has also been seen flitting across the side of the theatre from up in the gods. Footprints have been seen in areas of the building where no one has yet been and sounds of footsteps have also been heard, following closely behind.

Venue History

The Winter Gardens is a grade II listed building and was built in 1897 as an extension to the original complex. The original complex, dated back to 1878 and included seawater baths, bars and a ballroom. Declining profits in the 1950’s eventually led to the closure of the Winter Gardens in 1977, and that same year the main theatre building was given it’s listed status, however, the original ballroom complex was demolished five years later. The Winter Gardens was also used at one point by the RAF.

The building is currently owned by The Morecambe Winter Gardens Preservation Trust, a charitable company set up by The Friends of the Winter Gardens who are determined to restore the building to it’s former glory.
