The Old Nick Theatre is one of our most popular locations that has given our ghost hunters some very spooky experiences!

Your ghost hunt includes full access to this from former police station, plus dark enclosed cells with original graffiti, male and female exercise yards, and also the old courtroom upstairs. Which now serves its purpose as a small and unique theatre which gives this venue it’s name.

Prison locations more than ten times its size have seen fewer death within it’s walls. 25 are reported. This location boasts very dark cells and corridors for you to investigate and of course – to sleep in if you dare!

Why go home so soon?

Your Ghost Hunting Experience at the Old Nick Theatre does not need to end at 02:30am!  After your ghost hunt and at NO EXTRA COST you are invited to spend the night within the haunted rooms and cells . bedding is not provided so you will need to bring sleeping bags with you  – and check out will then be anytime up to 9am the following morning. You do not need to book this and you can decide on the night if you want to stay over, or head on home after your ghost hunt.

What happens on your Old Nick Ghost Hunt with Haunted Houses Events?

Your event includes 12 hours in the location if you choose. You can take your time investigating the many areas of the Old Nick Theatre. From former police quarters, dark enclosed cells, male and female exercise yards, to the old courtroom upstairs. Which now serves its purpose as a small and unique theatre!

Your ghost hunt will run from 9pm to 3am. Then you can either find a spot to rest your head for the night. Or continue to investigate on your own – until you can stay awake no more.

Your ghost hunt at The Old Nick Theatre will allow you to explore all areas of the building (except the broom cupboard).

You will be able to conduct a glass divination vigil as the Victorian’s once did. In addition table tipping is also very popular, and even a group human pendulum experiment. Plus, for eager ghost hunters Ouija boards will be on hand for you to use which can help your communication with the resident spirits.

For those who enjoy their technological ghost hunting, you will have the most up-to-date ghost hunting gadgets to use on your ghost hunt. Taking part in spirit call-outs is exciting and can be jumpy. Haunted Houses likes to work in small intimate teams to give you the very best experience possible. For the very brave lone vigils (ghost hunting in a room all alone) are very popular and plenty of opportunities to do so can be given at request.

The opportunity to spend the night at this incredible haunted location for NO ADDITIONAL COST! So either huddle closely in numbers or be completely alone as you tuck yourself in! Please note: There are no beds here, so camping beds and sleeping bags are required.

Reported Ghosts

Ghostly Activity includes Dark shadowy figures and frightening poltergeist activity in the dark derelict police cells. Figures have been seen in the theatre area which was used as the Old Court. Disembodied voices, loud footsteps and a dark sinister presence have also been reported. With over 25 deaths inside this Old Police Station no wonder it holds so many ghosts.

Our previous visits have seen high amounts of activity, from locked off trigger objects being moved, to whistles coming out of the darkness. The Old Nick is the favourite haunted location for many of the Haunted Houses team.

Venue History

The Old Nick was built in 1850 and served as the towns Police station and magistrates court for over one hundred years, which housed the town’s most notorious criminals until 1970. In 1979 it was purchased by the Gainsborough Theatre Company and the court room was converted into a small theatre. Small café added and is still used to this day as a venue for entertainment.

In 2017 the neglected cells and police station which had remained untouched since its closure in the 1970’s, was transformed into a Police museum which now houses a large display of local Police and crime memorabilia.
