Reported Ghosts

The manor has its fair share of ghost stories and with so much history it’s no mystery as to why. Reports of being watched, strange noises coming from empty rooms, sudden temperature changes, ghostly figures sighted within eerie rooms that some people have feared to enter.

Venue History

Sulgrave Manor is the ancestral home of George Washington, first president of the United States. The manor began life in 1539, built as a traditional long house by Lawrence Washington. The house was several rooms long but only one room deep with a second story above.

In 1673 the manor passed out of the hands of the Washington family when it was purchased Reverend Moses Hodge and it remained in their family for over 150 years. In 1680, Moses’s son made considerable changes to the manor whereby rooms on either side of the building where demolished and the stone reused to build the North Wing.

During the 1800’s the manor fell into disrepair and it’s status was downgraded to a farmhouse. In 1914 it was purchased by the Anglo-American Peace Centenary Committee and in 1920, Sir Reginald Blomfield, a renowned architect, was employed to restore the house and gardens. This saw the addition of a new West Wing to mirror the original Tudor wing. The manor is now a Grade 1 listed building
