Venue History

Thackray Medical Museum sits inside a grade 2 listed building, originally built in 1861 as the former Leeds Union Workhouse and accommodated 784 paupers. A harsh and unforgiving life of long hours and meagre meals awaited those who came looking for work.

Over the years new buildings were added to the workhouse complex including a separate infirmary. By the end of the 19th century, needs had changed, and the buildings had become largely used for medical care of the poor, rather than workhouse and training. A series of epidemics ravaged the infirmary, claiming the lives of many of the hospital’s patients.

During the first World War it was known as East Leeds War Hospital, caring for army personnel, and In 1925 was renamed St James’s Hospital. By 1945 the rest of the workhouse had merged with the hospital and it became part of the NHS in 1948. In the 1990s the building was considered unfit for modern medicine. Due to it’s listed status the building could not be demolished and permission was granted for it to house the Thackray Medical Museum.

The origins of the museum can be traced to Great George Street, Leeds, 1902, where Charles Thackray opened a small family-run chemist shop. In less than a century the corner shop grew into one of Britain’s principal medical companies, Chas F Thackray Limited, manufacturing drugs and medical instruments and pioneering the hip replacement operation. In the 1980s Charles Thackray’s grandson Paul Thackray established a small collection as an archive of the Leeds-based medical supplies company.
