Venue History

Today, the ancient remains of Wisbech Castle can be seen in Cambridgeshire, England. Founded by William I in 1072 and originally constructed from timber and turf, the castle was later rebuilt in stone in 1087. Unfortuantely, the original design and layout of the castle is a mystery due to a flood that destroyed the structure in 1236.

After years of repairs and restorations, the Bishop’s Palace was built from brick with Ketton Stone dressings in the 15th century. This castle later became a notorious prison, and the area underwent further development in the mid-17th century and in 1816. The current castle is known as ‘The Castle’ and it was given Grade II* listed status on 31 October 1983.

As one walks through the town of Wisbech, the grand old castle stands in the middle of a Circus – an incredible testament to the stories of past and the enduring history of this beautiful place.

Treasures, tragedy and glory at Wisbech Castle.

For centuries Wisbech Castle has been a point of great significance in England’s history. Even though the Domesday Book of 1086 makes no mention of a castle, by 1216 King John had already travelled through Wisbech and stayed at the castle overnight. On this night, a great tragedy befell the castle; while attempting to cross a river, the King’s baggage train got into trouble and was lost along with all its contents, including important regalia and treasure. The area has been an important source of treasure-seeking ever since.

Despite this, Wisbech Castle stood strong and grew even stronger in the following centuries. In 1236, the castle and town of Wisbech were almost completely destroyed in a storm, but the castle was rebuilt by 1246 and enjoyed the frequent visits of Kings Edward II in 1292, 1298, 1300 and 1305. The 1350s were a turbulent time for the castle; while at one moment the Bishop’s Constable and his men were ‘besieged’, a marriage licence was issued in the same year. Later on, on 23 July 1381, Thomas Arundel, Bishop of Ely gave directions for excommunication of those involved in insurrection in Cambridge, proving that the castle had been in good shape by this point.

In the 15th century, repairs to the castle’s tower, the bakehouse wall and other projects such as the Bishop’s Palace and a new flood gate, water gate and bridge reinforced its importance. What remains of this period are records of its role in local fishing, such as reeves sending porpoises and swordfish to the castle in 1350.

From all of this it is clear that Wisbech Castle has gone through centuries of many tales of glory and tragedy, each one more interesting than the last. It still stands tall in England’s rich and fascinating history.

“It was no secret in the 16th century that Wisbech was an ideal location for a prison. This small town’s remote location, in between London and Cambridge, meant it was incredibly difficult for prisoners to escape. As a result, a variety of individuals from all backgrounds were brought here and imprisoned for a range of reasons.

Under the rule of Queen Mary, for example, a number of Protestant dissidents were held in the Wisbech Castle and later executed. Likewise, Cecilia Samuel was tried, convicted and hung at Ely for her crime of drowning her newborn son in a nearby ditch.

But it wasn’t only political criminals that were incarcerated at the Wisbech prison. In the last years of the 16th century, a large group of 33 Catholics were brought in and placed in the castle, the majority of them being Jesuit priests. Conflict ensued between those who wished to establish a communal life, which eventually came to an end with a general reconciliation.

Overall, Dr Francis Young estimates that the Wisbech prison held over one hundred inmates. From Queen Mary’s Protestants to Dr Bridgewater’s Catholics, Wisbech saw them all and marked their lives forever.”
