The Dolphin Pub and Hotel – Littlehampton 30.11.2019 a definite scare in the night!
On 30th November 2019, the south east team visited the infamous “The Dolphin Pub and Hotel” in Littlehampton. The pub has become a place of legend and infamy after appearances on TV, and the alleged spirits that haunt the walls within, and so Haunted Houses Events embarked on a team investigation to uncover some of the spirits that haunt this epic venue.
On arrival, you could already feel that tonight was going to be special, the pub and hotel is larger than imagined and holds a great sense of mystery from times gone by. Ellie the landlady is absolutely lovely and welcoming and is keen to talk about the pub and the endless possibilities we were about to uncover. As Ellie completed a walk round of the pub, we were taken to a room in the cellar and it was pitch black, whilst standing there and doing a little bit of calling out, I was hit from behind with a stone. Was this the paranormal letting me know that they were watching us? The stone itself was a little heart shaped stone and everyone in the group was eager to explore more.
As we continue the tour we are told of tales of military men, prostitute and mafia type men, we come across a room that’s been sealed up and nothing can seem to break the walls down, but legend has it the body of a prostitute is buried in there. We also hear about half bodied apparitions, things going bump and hear how the pub once have access to the many smugglers tunnels that run underneath the town. With so much history and so much energy, we were keen to start the investigation.
We started off as a large group and visited room 7. This room is known for activity and within minutes of being in the room we had K2’s lighting up, what appears like shadows walking in front of the door, a possible apparition of a black cat, the rem pod going off and another possible apparition of a little girl leaning against the high chair. With activity going off we split into two groups with Ellie taking Kate, Ry, Chris and Wendy to room 2 whilst myself and Nick stay in room 7. Before long, Nick is calling out and looking for intelligent knocking and within minutes we start to get a response. As soon as Nick knocks he is getting a response, with the K2’s continuing to light up and the knocking coming almost instantaneously, we know we are communicating with something or someone more powerful than we comprehended. After further knocking and responses, Nick and myself unite with the others in room 2 to discover that they have managed to catch a voice on the EVP recorder. Not only have they captured a voice, there is four K2’s on the bed and they are all lighting up to red. What is making these K2’s light up? Who did the voice on the EVP belong too? Who was responding to Nick’s knocking? Something paranormal? Or is there a more logical explanation?
After a quick break we returned to room 7 where the south east team conducted a Ouija board. Now, for some context, the room was dark with just a dim light so we could see the board. The board was one that belonged to The Dolphin and none of the team had ever used it before or was familiar with its layout due to the nature of it being a circular board whilst we are use to rectangular shaped boards. We all placed our fingers on the glass and almost in an instant we had movement, slow at first but soon growing into large motions. We were talking to a spirit named William, a man who had raped and murdered his own niece and was hung for his crime. However, William didn’t show remorse and he certainly wasn’t going to show us remorse, in fact he wanted to start some trouble. Making a beeline for Nick, it was clear that William wanted to scare him, not only that but William, a former man of the cloth, revealed he thought I was the biggest sinner, possibly due to being a homosexual. William tried to entice fear into the board, moving the glass randomly, trying to reveal facts about the team sitting around the board, attempting to use the fictional character of zozo to scare us. However, he appeared powerless against the living!
For our third vigil we went down to the cellar. The cellar is very large, and very dark. As we sat around the Ouija board in the basement, we were physically startled by one of the loudest bangs any of us had heard. It sounded like a metal door being slammed shut, but we were the only ones down there… weren’t we?
We all felt scared as we decided to investigate what the loud noise could have been, but all doors were shut securely, we couldn’t work out where the noise had come from or who was responsible, but we were collectively scared. As we huddled down the corridor and called out we noticed a wire being moved, in apparent flicks upwards. When asked on command to flick the wire to the ceiling, whoever was with us obliged and the wire flicked straight up. Was it a spirit? Was it a spirit engaging with us? Who knows?
We split back into two groups with Kate and Nick going back to room 7 whilst Chris, Wendy and myself stayed in the cellar.
Whilst in the cellar we had more communication via the K2’s before I felt I could see the apparition of a little boy in shorts with a bowler hair cut leaning next to some ladders. As Wendy encouraged the child to play with a ball we had some fantastic responses from the rempod which was going off, lighting up in all colours and appeared to respond to Wendy asking the child to play with the ball. We were amazed by the activity, as we headed up to the bar area we then began to hear the whistling. The story is the whistling is from a sailor boy whistling himself a tune. As I whistled to encourage the spirit to repeat it, we got a response. Not only that but we could hear whistling from different areas of the bar, as well as from the pool table. What was creating this whistling? Was their something more scientific in the cause and effect or was it really the spirit of a sailor boy?
The only way to decide is to visit The Dolphin yourself and explore this magnificent pub and hotel. This venue has to be at the top of every ghost hunters to do list! Join the haunted houses team as we return to this great venue in 2020. Is it the most haunted pub in the south of the U.K.? It’s up to you to decide.
